The Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival is a genuine family affair that involves the participation of the Flyers' and Phantoms’ players, management, staff, alumni and their families. The first Carnival was held February 1, 1977, and raised $95,435. Later that year, one of the Flyers’ own, Barry Ashbee, died of leukemia. With his death came a truly heartfelt focus to the Carnival. The monies raised from that first Carnival were designated for Hahnemann University Hospital which led to the formation of the Barry Ashbee Research Laboratories. The Flyers Wives Holiday Event and Stick auction are a few of our other fundraising events. Now, with the dawning of the new NHL season, we are expanding our focus to include many charities within the Greater Philadelphia Region.
Among the more than 100 charities that benefit each year from Flyers Charities events, The Barry Ashbee Research Laboratories at Hahnemann University Hospital remains one of the recipients near and dear to our hearts. The Flyers Charities have joined together to make significant donations to local organizations including funding of the Flyers' Wives Art Gallery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, Temple University Health Systems, Drexel University, the St. Agnes Medical Center Surgical Services, and the University of Pennsylvania Emergency Room. Special donations were also made to the Wellness Community of Philadelphia, and The Children's Crisis Treatment Center of Philadelphia.
